The theme for 2024 World Prematurity Day is “Over 13 million babies born prematurely every year. Access to quality care everywhere!”. The day’s focus is on highlighting the global disparities in healthcare for preterm babies and calling for universal access to high-quality care.
While we personally experienced a delivery at 31 weeks, we thankfully had access to a great NICU team. We spent 8 weeks NICU and had more than a year of therapy afterward. Even now, we still have struggles related to her being born premature off and on.
When i look back at pictures though, I also see myself in these moments. So much of prematurity awareness revolves around caring for these sweet babies, and often conversations about caring for the caregivers are limited. Rasing a child with prematurity is a huge part of my story as well though.
I want to take a moment and celebrate all the caregivers that overcome the challenges of prematurity and help bring awareness for access to high quality support for not only the 13 million babies born every year, but to each of their caregivers as well!
